ECMO Cannulation (Pre-Conference)

Learning objectives:
- Practice percutaneous ECMO cannulation on high-fidelity training mannequins.
- Learn appropriate use of ultrasound/echocardiogram to facilitate safe cannulation.
- Discuss cannulation tips/tricks and troubleshooting.
- Safely connect ECMO cannulae to the primed ECMO circuit and initiate ECMO.
- Understand the considerations behind choosing between several VV ECMO [Fem-Jug, Fem-Fem, Jugular Bicaval], VA ECMO [Central, Peripheral], and hybrid configurations [V-VA, VA-V, LAVA].
- Review cannula design and selection, and review other components of a ECMO circuit.
- Discuss weaning strategies and percutaneous decannulation techniques.
Comprehensive Paediatric ECMO (Pre-Conference)

Target Audience: ECMO Specialist Nurses, Paediatric intensivists, Cardiac Surgeons, Anaesthesiologists, Respiratory Therapists

Using patient case scenarios, VA and VV ECMO concepts are further explored. In the setting of small groups, students will have an opportunity for hands on learning and troubleshooting of clinical cases.

- This course is designed for learners who have already completed a neonatal/pediatric ECMO didactic course or for practitioners with a strong foundational knowledge of ECMO patient care.
- The course qualifies for Step 2 of the ELSO Certification application.
